Nurture Your Child's Voice Through Play and Movement
“What’s therapy actually like?”
It’s one of the most common questions I get from parents, and it’s such an important one. When you're navigating uncertainty or trying to make the best choice for your child, knowing what to expect can bring a little comfort and clarity.
1. It starts with a conversation
When you first get in touch, we’ll book a free telephone call, just a chance for us to chat. I love hearing about your wonderful young person, and this is where you can tell me a little more about what’s led you to seek support. Whether you’re just exploring options, have been stuck in a long waiting game, or are looking for something that finally feels like the right fit, this call helps us both understand if we’re a good match.
2. The initial assessment
If you decide to go ahead, we’ll book an initial assessment. This is typically a 1-hour appointment held in our warm and welcoming therapy space. It’s technically a clinic, but it won’t feel clinical – it’s a nurturing, movement- and play-based space where children can be themselves.
During the assessment, we:
- Take a detailed developmental and case history
- Observe how your child naturally communicates - through their body, gestures, sounds, words, or phrases
- Explore what they love, how they play, and what makes them unique
- Begin to understand their communication style, including whether they're developing language using a gestalt or analytic model.
From there, we’ll talk through what we’ve noticed – drawing on both informal observation and any relevant formal tools – and together, we’ll decide on the next steps.
3. Tailored support that fits your family
Some families choose regular therapy sessions (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly). Others prefer a check-in model. There’s no one-size-fits-all – support is built around your child, your family, and your goals.
4. Therapy that includes you
Therapy sessions are 45 minutes long, and parents or carers are always part of the session. This isn’t a drop-off model – you are a vital part of the process.
There’s a strong focus on parent coaching, but don’t worry – it’s not about homework or flashcards. It’s about empowering you with simple strategies and insights that you can take into everyday moments at home. Because real change doesn’t just happen in a session – it happens in all the small, connected moments throughout your day.
We’ll look at:
- How you naturally communicate with your child
- Small adaptations that can make a big impact
- Ways to carry therapeutic ideas into routines, play, and family life
5. Collaborating with schools (when needed)
Sometimes, families want support to extend into school. We offer consultative work with schools – including observations, skill sharing, and strategy planning with staff. This helps create consistency and makes sure your child is supported across all environments.
A few final things to know
- No question is too small. You’re encouraged to ask, share, wonder aloud.
- This is a safe, collaborative space. You are part of the team.
- During sessions, please be present and involved - not just physically, but emotionally. We ask that phones are tucked away so you can immerse yourself in the process with your child.
Because therapy here isn’t just about helping your child communicate.
It’s about helping you feel confident, connected, and supported along the way too.
